Staff profile: Paul Tustin
Head of the Immunology Department

Responsibilities
I am responsible for the routine running of the immunology department. Immunology staff perform all the blood testing for infectious serology (mainly blood born viruses e.g. HIV), autoimmune serology (e.g. rheumatoid, Coeliac disease and other autoimmune diseases) and ABO blood grouping.
I also maintain quality standards and ensure the immunology team runs optimally, smoothly and efficiently to provide high quality and meaningful results to the requesting doctor.
Most rewarding part of your job
I enjoy coming up with creative solutions to problems or enhancing processes to make them more streamlined and efficient within the existing systems -- a bit of the "number 8 fencing wire" in me, I suppose.
How do you most enjoy spending time outside work?
I enjoy the time I can spend with my family, especially supporting my children when they compete in various sports events. I also enjoy coaching and motivating young children into their first sporting encounters.
Health tip
Get outdoors with the family and do things together -- go for a swim, or to a park to kick a ball around, or a bike ride. Instead of a family movie, try bowling.
Something your colleagues may not know about you
I enjoy building and DIY around the house; the latest project just completed being a substantial new deck and verandah. This has added valuable "escape space" even when it is wet, away from my three, increasingly noisy children.
