Health tip: We all need the sun

Our older readers may remember getting cod liver oil fed to them as a child. It tasted terrible but it was a great health tonic.

It contained Vitamin D, an important vitamin for ensuring we have strong bones. Very few foods have Vitamin D in them and the sun is our main source (around 80 per cent).

Too much sun in the summer, though, can be dangerous. We recommend getting out in the sun before 11 in the morning and after 4 in the afternoon.

The harshest rays are no longer in the sky but you will still get the benefits of vitamin D being made in your skin.

During the winter, we do not get enough sun hours to get the vitamin D we need. So, try and regularly eat oily fish, such as canned tuna and salmon, eggs, lean meat and dairy products, but when you see the sun poking through those winter clouds, get out and enjoy it!
